AMPK, your metabolic master switch.

The enzyme that tells your body it's running low on energy — and triggers it to start using its own. Most people have it switched off, and the reasons are dull and fixable.

AMPK is the enzyme that signals to your body that it is low on energy.

That single sentence is most of the mechanism. AMPK is your cell's fuel gauge. When energy runs low, it activates — and when it activates, the whole system flips from storing to using.

What happens when it's on

When AMPK is activated, it triggers fat burning — particularly in the abdomen, where the fat people describe as stubborn tends to sit.

It also improves insulin sensitivity, increases mitochondrial production, and switches on cellular clean-up processes. It's one of the more important switches in metabolic health, which is why it gets called a master switch.

The plot twist

Most people have it switched OFF.

Not because of anything exotic. Four causes:

Poor sleep. Disrupts every metabolic signal downstream, including this one.

Chronic stress. Cortisol raises blood glucose, and available glucose is precisely the signal that tells AMPK it isn't needed.

No movement. Muscle contraction is one of the most direct activators there is. Sitting for eleven hours a day is a fairly effective way of never switching it on.

Sugar overload. The big one. AMPK activates when energy is low. A steady supply of quick glucose across the whole day means the gauge never reads low, and the switch never flips. This is the mechanism behind grazing being metabolically worse than eating actual meals.

None of that is a supplement deficiency. It's four ordinary features of a modern week.

Six ways to switch it back on

Her list, in order of practicality.

HIIT exercise

The fastest and most reliable. Intense effort depletes cellular energy quickly, which is exactly the signal AMPK responds to. Overlaps neatly with the VO2 max session you should be doing anyway — one session covers both.

Prolonged overnight fasting — 14–16 hours

Genuinely effective, and the one that needs a caveat.

If you have a menstrual cycle, this is not a fixed number. Fourteen to sixteen hours is appropriate in the follicular phase and counterproductive in the luteal, where it raises cortisol and worsens the very insulin sensitivity you were trying to improve. The cycle guide has the windows.

Simplest version: finish dinner earlier rather than delaying breakfast. Same window, better alignment with your cortisol curve.

Cold plunge

Cold exposure activates AMPK, partly through the energy cost of thermogenesis. Two to three minutes is plenty; there's no evidence that longer is better and there is a real risk in going too far.

Honest note: the enthusiasm around cold exposure currently runs some distance ahead of the evidence. It works. It is not the most important item on this list.

Sauna

Heat stress activates similar pathways, and the cardiovascular data on regular sauna use is genuinely strong. Pleasant, low-risk, and it doubles as sensory rest.

Deep sleep

Not simply hours in bed — deep sleep specifically. Consistent timing, a cool dark room, no alcohol, no screens late. This is the one that makes all five others work better.

Lower-carbohydrate eating

Lower, not zero, and the point is steadiness rather than restriction.

Fewer glucose spikes means more windows in which AMPK can activate. You get most of the effect from pairing carbohydrates with protein, fat and fibre, and from not grazing — without removing anything.

The pattern underneath

Read the six together and they're one idea in six costumes: periods where energy is genuinely demanded, and periods where it genuinely isn't supplied.

Modern life removes both. Constant food availability, constant comfortable temperature, constant low-grade activity that never demands much and never allows recovery. The switch stays off because nothing ever asks it to flip.

You don't need all six. You need contrast somewhere in your week.

  1. Buying a supplement that claims to activate AMPK instead of sleeping properly. One is free and works.
  2. Grazing all day on "healthy" snacks. The gauge never reads low. Frequency matters more than content here.
  3. Applying a fixed 16-hour window all month if you have a cycle. Correct for two weeks, counterproductive for the other two.
  4. Cold plunging for fifteen minutes. Two to three is the useful range and beyond it you're taking on risk for nothing.
  5. Doing all six while sleeping five hours. Sleep is the multiplier. Without it the rest underperform.
  6. Treating "low carb" as "no carb." Steady is the objective, not empty.

The one thing

Stop eating three hours before bed, tonight.

You get a longer overnight fasting window, better deep sleep, and a flatter overnight glucose curve — three of the six levers moved by one decision, and you didn't remove a single food.
